In Defence of Marcion

Various Christian sites explain the awful error of Marcion
He was the very worst Heretic of the early church. The early church fathers all wrote against him, he was excommunicated in 145 AD. They managed to lose all his writings, so awful were his views.

He was a Dualist, believing in an irreconcilable opposition between an evil God of the Old Testament, and the Good God of the New.

The Yahweh God of the Old Testament was Evil - that was his terrible heresy.  Marcion referred to the Old Testament God as, "the creator of evils, lustful for war, inconstant in his attitude, and self-contradictory." He viewed the "god of the Jews" as capricious, cruel, judgmental and vindictive.

He was right, of course. Here for example, is Yahweh explaining the tactics of deception, with His normal ethics of mass murder, theft, despoilation of others culture and property, Deuteronomy 20:
When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the Lord your God gives you from your enemies. This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them…
Christians need to bite the bullet and accept the judgement of the atheist Richard Dawkins:

“The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Totally! His rituals are all drenched in blood. One keeps turning the pages of the OT to see who is going to be bumped off next, and by what macabre deaths.

Racial supremacism:

Deuteronomy 28:1, “the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth” and at 28:10, “And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee” and “the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath. . .”
Isaiah 60:11-12: “Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the wealth of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

Jesus’ View
The world needs a dualistic Christian church. Have you ever heard a vicar discussing the thunderous words of J.C. on the Pharisees, who were the OT specialists of his day, reported in the gospels? Surely not!

“You Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness,” (Luke 11:39)
“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it,”  (John 8:44)
Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor alllow those who would enter to go in. woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.’
”Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.. you serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?” (Matthew 23:13 27, 33).
The scribes were the people writing the OT, the Pharisees were those who taught it.

No Evil Creator

Marcion gets dismissed for his ‘gnostic’ view of an evil creator-god. The OT has the world created by the Elohim, in the first chapter of Genesis, which is not the same as Yahweh, the tribal god of the Hebrews. Elohim is neither singular nor male, Yahweh is both. I do not recommend attempting to believe that the tribal ‘god of the Hebrews’ Yahweh created the world. Or, if you want to claim that the two are the same – as Christians do – then you are knowing better than the OT. Indeed the con-trick of just deleting the names of god in the OT and replacing them by ‘the Lord’ was done for this very purpose. Essential reading here is The Controversy of Zion, at least its opening chapters (online) by Douglas Reid.

There is a marvellous optimism in the first chapter of Genesis, where the Elohim keep seeing that their work ‘is good’ through the seven Days of creation. It was composed in Alexandria and has nothing to do with the dark, brooding presence of Yahweh.

Let us restore the lovely OT names of God - El-Shaddai, Elohim, Adonai, Yah-weh. Then we could at last have an informed discussion of the subject.

Of Light and Darkness
Christianity will continue to be a destructive force in our world, as long as it worships an evil god. It needs to accept the Marcianite duality or something like it. The OT is far longer than the New, and however glorious JC’s teachings may be, in practice the political world allows psychopathic killers to rise to the top, who will always resonate to the OT ethics. These warrant the Final Battle, sparing no victims (unless Yahweh is in a good mood, and you’re allowed to keep the young virgins…)
Yahweh is the only god who tells His chosen people to lend money with interest to others, the goyim, but not to fellow-Hebrews (Deuteronomy).
It is recorded that Marcion alluded to the OT god as saying, I make peace, and create evil... (Isaiah, 45) Let’s compare this frank admission with Ezekiel, where Yahweh confesses to the evil laws and ruinous commandments He has given:
“I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes and keep my judgements, and do them….Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me; they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgements to do them…. then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness….Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good and judgements whereby they should not live; And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am the Lord.” (20:24-26)
(note the child-sacrifice allusion) Or again Jeremiah, ““for I bring evil from the north, and great destruction… Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon this place that the ears of every one who hears of it will tingle. ”.(4:6, 19:3) – He certainly did that! Yahweh could not resist devising wicked, evil schemes: ‘Thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword which I am sending among them.’

The Evil OT God affirmed, “anything devoted to destruction is most holy to the Lord” (Leviticus 27:28). For example, “They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it – man and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.(Josh 6:21) The OT has always held a special attraction for psychopathic killers.

Finally, Yahweh breaks His promises or Covenant, with His usual loathsome curses:
The flock detested me, and I grew weary of them and said, “I will not be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish. Let those who are left eat one another’s flesh.” Then I took my staff called Favor and broke it, revoking the covenant I had made with all the nations. (Zech. 11:9-10)
Jeremiah alluded to: "'How can you say, "We are wise, for we have the law of the LORD," when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely? (8:8) – The words written down by the scribes are lies, Jeremiah was saying.
Has the world not heard enough, of Christians pretending that the OT expresses the being of a benevolent deity? Is it not time for them to try and comprehend the fundamental duality and mysterious struggle between light and darkness in the world in which we live?

Church Reading
At the St Michael's church I go to, here was the OT reading for today (16 Nov 2014) (Zephaniah 1: 7,12-18):
How can people not realize that this is an evil god, one who raged on endlessly  about destruction, mass murder - and theft ('their goods shall become a booty')?
